Earth Day 2023
It only feels like yesterday that we wrote about Earth Day 2022 and now it is Earth Day 2023 tomorrow!
So we are interested in hearing what you are planning on doing to make a difference this time round, and how it might differ from last year…
To be completely frank, we are of the opinion that Earth Day is every day, not just one day a year where you promise to have a think about trying to be better at reducing your environmental impact!
But if Earth Day is new to you then it is a great opportunity to kick off your green and environmental journey, and use it as a platform from which to start, both in business and every day life.
Businesses have a huge platform from which to make changes for the better, but the problem often faced by businesses trying to plan and implement their Green or ESG Strategy is that it is all too easy to tick a few boxes, make a few statements and commitments, not really achieve anything much, and then be faced with accusations of Greenwashing…
If you haven’t thought about Earth Day 2023 yet in your business it is probably too late to crowbar any real commitment or tie in to this one day this year, BUT instead you can use it to really kick start your Green commitment and strategy, and set yourself tangible and achievable targets to hit by Earth Day 2024!
The Earth Day mission is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide, so try using it as your starting point for real commitment and drive within your business towards a lower environmental impact.
But don’t get caught in the tick boxing and greenwashing trap of communicating lots of things you can’t possibly achieve, measure or deliver, just because it ‘makes you look better’, or just saying you are ‘committed’ to becoming a greener and more sustainable business without any idea of how to be committed or real intention of taking any action.
This approach will get you absolutely nowhere and just damage your reputation.
In order to avoid greenwashing this Earth Day (and beyond) you need to focus on tangible actions instead of grand claims around your carbon footprint or environmental impact.
In a 2021 study by the European Commission it found that 42% of green claims were exaggerated, false, or deceptive! Which points directly at greenwashing on a large scale… Don’t fall into this bracket!
Use Earth Day 2023 as a launchpad to start work on becoming a more sustainable business through transparency, credibility, honesty, accountability, and strategy.
Try focusing not only on what you can stop doing, but also what you can start doing to make positive change.
We are already experiencing the negative impacts and changes of global warming and the climate crisis now and we need to ‘invest for our planet’ before it is too late.
So instead of just paying lip service to becoming greener, and ticking a few green boxes, take some real tangible action and make Earth Day 2023 the first day of your environmental journey towards a greener and more sustainable business.
